North Charleston District 4 Updates-January 2018

Beautiful view in North Charleston, SC presented by Melanie DeHaven, DeHaven Fine Home Specialists.

It’s cold – and will get colder. We can expect record-challenging temperatures through Thursday.
And there’s a growing chance of winter precipitation beginning midday Wednesday and continuing into the evening hours.

Snow, sleet and ice are definite possibilities – with all of the usual upsets to traffic and possibly schools’ schedules.  The city’s trash pickups are likely to be affected, too.

Please keep abreast of the forecasts via newspapers and the media. The Charleston National Weather Station has an experimental interactive forecast map that you can access at
http://www.weather.gov/chs/winter.
Check on your neighbors who might be especially challenged by this harsh weather. Please let me know of anyone needing public assistance.

Wescott Boulevard Sidewalk – Over the Christmas holidays, the mayor’s staff assisted our efforts to get the contractor  to expedite the repair of this high-use sidewalk. This upset has gone on far too long. It’s a Dorchester County water and sewer upgrade primarily related to the new apartment complex now under construction.  The contractor has promised the work should be done this week – by Friday, that is. With the terrible weather forecasts, that schedule might slip a bit but rest assured the city is monitoring this and demanding this sidewalk be returned to its usefulness asap.

In The Works for 2018
Freshening plans for further development of the Wescott Boulevard traffic circle parcels, in accordance with zoning decisions made a decade ago.
A new tenant at the Corner at Wescott in the parcel once proposed for a fuel station.
More intersection improvements on Dorchester Road.

An interim city conducted traffic study on Patriot Boulevard, between Wescott Boulevard and Palmetto Commerce Parkway. (Traffic signals are my bias; we’ll see.)
Earlier  completion of Weber Boulevard between Palmetto Commerce Parkway and Patriot. Developer has until end of 2020 to finish this leg but we’re trying to get it expedited.

As for the Council District 9 properties in front of the McKewn development next to the Pye School, it has been zoned for apartments for nearly 10 years and the planning “noise” is that an apartment complex will begin there midyear, more reason that a traffic study for this stretch of Patriot be given priority.
I will keep you posted…..

The Aquatics Center –This project is jointly sponsored by our city and Dorchester District 2 School Board and should be out for bids by February 1. If the price tag is within the $21 million budget, work should begin in the second quarter and the complex could be open by late 2019.  An overlooked aspect of this plan is a much-needed new roadway connecting Fort Dorchester High School campus to Patriot Boulevard.
