Garbage and Trash Pick-up Schedules

As I’ve reported several times, city sanitation services for District 4 and
District 9 will be out-sourced, beginning in July. These changes are
intended to improve overall services and generate cost savings over time.
Service schedules for many neighborhoods will be changing. Take a look
at the appended table (Map). Residents will receive post card advisories
beginning June 25. All homes will get new 96-gallon “cans.” Online links
and fliers on garbage cans will provide all the information needed for
seamless transitions. And there will telephone hotlines for any problems.

Aquatics Center Updates

Silt-fencing is in and site work will begin next week. Formal ground-breaking
ceremonies for this $24 million facility and the new access road for the Fort Dorchester
high School campus will be held in mid-July.

PROJECT FROM HELL ? MAYBE

The apartments construction on Wescott Boulevard might just qualify. This District 9
work has created repeated traffic interruptions, rocks in the street and damage to the
sidewalks and landscaping on adjacent rights-of-way. The city building inspector has
visited the site several times this week and so have I. The contractor and developer
are on notice that fines and work-stoppage are in store for continued violations. The
mayor and IU have declared that there should be no certificates of occupancy until
a “punch-list” of rights-of-way mitigations, including landscaping, sidewalks restoration
and tree compensations. We plan to ask the HOAs of adjacent neighborhoods to
help formulate this punch list.

PAVING AND POTHOLES – Emergency repaving has been completed on the snow
damaged sections of Asycough and Oak Forest Boulevard. The city’s public works
crews have a comprehensive work plan for major porthole repairs throughout the
district beginning in July. This will include repairs on the city’s sections of Windsor Hill
Boulevard. Mayor Summey, Councilman Skipper and I have petitioned the
Dorchester County for funding support from the County Transportation Committee.
This Committee administers several millions of dollars annually in mandated state fuel
tax rebates. Our city’s streets have received very little of these funds – VERY LITTLE –
and we are determined to achieve better equities.
