Councilman Ron Brinson – January 15, 2019
Happy New Year! 2019 is off to a busy start. ….and with some apparent good news about one of the most popular constituent interests.
Last week, I contacted Krispy Kreme Corporate Headquarters asking for yet another update on the very popular project that was started and stopped at Ladson Road and Palmetto Commerce Parkway. Then on Monday, the development company asked our city’s planning and zoning department for a site plan review. Apparently, the proposed change would mean the entire site next to Bojangles could proceed as a Krispy Kreme store. The request is in an administrative and field review. It could be quickly approved. We see no reason this change will not be granted. No further details as to a timetable but there is activity at the site related to the requested changes. We’ve been disappointed before, but this is certainly promising news about. So, fingers crossed, all! I’ll keep you posted.
Patriot Boulevard at Club Course – That ugly water flow into the public right-of-way has been diagnosed as ground water likely related to an underground spring. It is technically an SCE&G issue, but Mayor Summey and I have asked the city’s Public Works Team to arrange a fix. A contract to install a special drain has been approved and work should be completed the week of January 21. (And we’ll try to settle with SCE&G.)
Our City’s Public Works Team also did a nice job repairing more than 100 potholes last week. This will be a repetitive challenge as we work to get Dorchester County to help our city repave these well-used arterials, such as Wescott Boulevard and Patriot Boulevard.
Apartments, Apartments, Apartments ! The project from hell – that mostly vacant complex on Wescott Boulevard awaits further occupancy permits from our city. The issue now is the removal of a main natural gas line that had intersection with drainage swales. Also, the city asked the developers to landscape drainage swales as “Eco Swales.” They have agreed to do this. They have also repaired damaged landscaping across Wescott Boulevard. Councilman Skipper and I will meet next week with the developers of the apartments complex next to Pye Elementary. We will also arrange for HOA leaders to meet with these folks. Our objectives will be to avoid the disruptive construction effects we saw with the Wescott Boulevard project. These developers seem far more sensitive such issues and willing to respond to our concerns.
Panera Bread at Corner at Wescott will soon break ground and should be in operation by June 1.
No updates on The Famous Toastery, the project on Dorchester Road that was shut down by the county shortly after site work began last year.
At The Aquatics Center – Walls are going up. Weather permitting, this complex could be in operation by November. Our city’s recreation team now a team of aquatics programs experts. They’re already at work planning school interface activities for students, competitive events and community uses.
