District 4 Updates North Charleston – Councilman Ron Brinson – August 2019

Councilman Ron Brinson – August 11, 2019

As a North Charleston Police Department deputy chief said last week,“the first days of school are the definition of chaos.”  That’s especially true as we anticipate the new school year for Dorchester District 2 on Monday, August 19.

Additional officers will be present to handle traffic congestion, especially at Joe Pye Elementary and Fort Dorchester Elementary. In fact, the school year brings traffic snarls all over the region, so be prepared accordingly.

Dorchester District 2 has confirmed that its special bus service within Coosaw Preserve will continue this school year, with additional stops in the rear of the neighborhood.

As I have previously reported, our city has initiated a project that will lead to better turning flows at Joe Pye Elementary on Patriot Boulevard, and new traffic signals at the entrances to Coosaw Preserve and McKewn. This work is underway, orders for the signals and the decorative “arms” have been placed. We are hopeful all aspects of this project will be completed by Christmas.

Look for the paving machines in September on Wescott Boulevard, Patriot Boulevard, and Windsor Hill Boulevard.  Work orders have been issued for repaving and restriping certain sections of these heavily traveled neighborhood roads.

Permitting issues have delayed the final completion of Weber Boulevard, from Palmetto Commerce Parkway and Patriot Boulevard. We are hopeful this work will begin – finally – in December and be completed within four months thereafter.

Ladson Road is one of Regional Charleston’s busiest traffic arterials. It’s popular, too, for commercial development.  Another Eggs Up Grill is now open in front of Walmart Neighborhood Market.  A Fantastic Sams hair salon is open in the same out parcel.  Coast Car Wash has begun site work near the Bojangles’ at Palmetto Commerce Parkway. There are no updates to share on the long-pending and long-anticipated Krispy Kreme between the car wash and BoJangles.

Panera Bread at the Corner at Wescott should open in early September. I’ll refine this in next newsletter.

Development plans are progressing for the property tract on Dorchester Road, directly across from the Trump Street entrance to Charleston Park. A Planned Development District will be considered by our city’s Planning Commission. The property is now zoned B-2 and ready for commercial, mostly retail development. A PDD could contemporize development options and produce a better result for the community.   In prospect are a new grocery store, a home furnishing store, restaurants, and possibly a traffic signal at the entrance to Wescott Park.

The Aquatics Center is progressing nicely toward a Christmas Season completion, but the construction site lately has been a mess. We’ve asked the contractor to clean it up – and keep it more tidy.
