Councilman Ron Brinson August 5, 2020 District 4 Updates A New School Year – School boards have been working zealously to formulate plans for safe reopenings. The challenges are daunting, for these board members AND for parents, teachers, administrators, students. You can find detailed information at these web sites: Dorchester District 2 https://www.ddtwo.org/site/Default.aspx?PageID=24945 Charleston County Schools https://www.ccsdschools.com/safe-restart ROADSIDE GRASS – CUTTING AND MAINTENANCE – The COVID 19 crisis has impacted city revenues related to declines in retail sales, restaurant sales, hotels occupancy and business license renewals. Mayor Summey and City Council are managing this on a priority grid that will work to avoid tax increases while protecting public safety and sanitation jobs. Many of you have noticed the delays in grass cutting and general maintenance of roadway shoulders. This relates to the cost-control initiatives. The work will be done, just not with the same frequency of last summer. AQUATIC CENTER OPENED – This $23 million world-class facility has opened to very positive reviews, but its initial operations are limited by the pandemic realities. Lap swimming is available. And watch the announcement sign on Patriot Boulevard for notice of tour availabilities. As quickly as possible, a full program of activities will be available, including water polo, swimming lessons, exercise classes, competitive team swimming and even birthday parties. Parker’s Kitchen Windsor Hill – This quickly-moving project is not within our city’s limits and therefore North Charleston’s control is limited. But we do have cooperative monitoring with Dorchester County planners. This fuel station-convenience store-restaurant project was reviewed in public meetings earlier this year. It is understandable that a chief concern, especially for Indigo Palms residents who do reside in our city, are traffic flows. Our public works teams assisted me in finding the detailed traffic flow analysis and site planning documents. Here are the links….. I don’t have a timetable. Decorative Traffic Sign-light arms have been installed at Dorchester Road/Club Course/Netherby. And the material has been delivered for the Patriot Boulevard entrances to Coosaw Preserve and McKewn subdivisions. Work schedules will depend on contractor availability. Also, City Council has approved the initial engineering and planning studies for widening Patriot, from Wescott Boulevard to Palmetto Commerce Parkway. Charleston County’s project to expand and improve the Palmetto Commerce Parkway/Patriot Boulevard intersection should be completed by September 1.
