Councilman Ron Brinson September 14, 2020 Here are the very best information links for your November 3 general election voting options and absentee balloting and registration: https://www.scvotes.gov/absentee-voting https://www.dorchestercountysc.gov/government/administrative-services/election-commission https://www.charlestoncounty.org/departments/bevr/absentee-voting.php The S.C. Legislature is still tweaking absentee voting rules. One possible option to be considered at this week’s special session is that every voter could vote “absentee.” Dorchester Election Commission has confirmed that In-Person Early Voting Precincts are set at Wescott Park Community Center (9006 Dorchester Rd)…and the Rollings Edwards Community Center (301 N Hickory St, Summerville) Monday through Friday, from October 19to October 30, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Also, the Dorchester County Voter Registration Office at 201 Johnston Street in St. George will open for balloting October 5 through November 2, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m….And on Saturday, October 31, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (The Legislature will consider moving this start date to October 2.) Charleston County Voters have four early-voting precinct options, including one at the Coliseum-Convention Center. https://www.charlestoncounty.org/departments/bevr/absentee-in-person.php The Cedar Grove shopping center plans continue, even at a somewhat slower pace given the COVID19 impacts. Here is not yet a timetable fir site clearing, but the Lidl grocery chain has essentially confirmed its intentions to locate in this new development. Here’s a link that provides a timely update: https://www.postandcourier.com/business/discount-grocer-lidl-plans-a-second-store-in-charleston-area/article_289ece48-dd76-11ea-895d-8b6d813eb018.html The on-again off-again car wash project next to Krispy Kreme on Ladson Road seems to be in the “off-again” mode. We are checking for an update of plans from the developer. The Aquatic Center is moving toward routine operations. High school meets are being held and community use is increasing steadily. The facility is getting very positive reviews. The South Carolina high school state championships will be held at the Aquatic Center next month — without fans. (The bike racks which have been on back-order for several weeks, will soon be in place.) https://www.facebook.com/NCHSAquatics/ LOCK YOUR VEHICLES ! North Charleston police are tracking the regional problem of nighttime prowlers roaming the streets looking for valuables in cars and trucks – especially those left unlocked. More than 90 per cent of these thefts occur in unlocked vehicles. So lock yours, and call 911 if you see any suspicious activity or if you have camera surveillance that depict this activity. Pandemic Effects on City Finances – Every local government is challenged to deal with the lost-revenue impacts of the COVID19 crisis. We are experiencing critical reductions of hospitality and lodging tax revenues, business license renewals and sales tax sharing. Our Mayor and City Council are taking steps to deal with these realities with the priorities of preserving police and fire and sanitation operations – and avoiding property tax increases. One immediate action – a freeze spending at 2019 levels. We are hopeful these downward trends will abate over the next 90 days. There will be lapses in non-essential functions such as grass cutting and landscape maintenance, so please be patient. Please recirculate this little newsletter to your neighbors.
