Councilman Ron Brinson District 4 Updates October 16, 2020 |
It’s Important…SO VOTE!!! November 2 is an important election day – nationally for sure, and for our state and regional community. There are plenty of opportunities to vote early in-person and there is still time to request and complete by-mail absentee ballots. Dorchester County Election Commission’s early voting precinct opens 8:30 a.m. Monday, October 19, at Wescott Park community center—- 9006 Dorchester Road; bear left after entering the park. Another precinct at Rollins Edwards Community Center, 301 N. Hickory St. in Summerville, will also open at 8:30 a.m. Monday. These precincts will operate weekdays, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday, October 30. All options for voting in Dorchester County are detailed at https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/SCDORCHESTER/bulletins/2a28804 Charleston County voters can cast early ballots at any of four locations, including the North Charleston Coliseum. Visit this link for details: https://www.charlestoncounty.org/departments/bevr/absentee-in-person.php Property tax bills are being mailed and there are some changes, including value appraisals as mandated by law and corresponding millage adjustments. Here is an excellent summary for Dorchester County property owners: https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/SCDORCHESTER/bulletins/2a5ce0e The Cedar Grove shopping center planning continues, albeit at a slowed pace because of the pandemic. The current unofficial timetable is for land-clearing to begin in the first quarter of 2021 with stores open in mid-2022. The Dorchester Road directory sign for the Corner at Wescott (behind Panera Bread) was demolished three weeks ago in a vehicle accident. It has taken far too long to have this removed and replaced. We have asked the center’s developer to expedite this process – on an “immediate if-not-sooner” timetable. We are beginning to hear about plans for the buildout of the remaining section of the Wescott Circle. Current zoning, which dates back more than a decade, would permit retail entities or even a lodging facility. We have begun discussions with the project planners and will do all we can to have a project based on ample community input and the current conditions of traffic, density, etc. I have asked HOA leadership to help organize focus groups, etc. The decorative traffic signals’ arms have been installed at Patriot Boulevard entrances to Coosaw Preserve and McKewn…. Charleston County’s intersection rebuild project at Palmetto Commerce Parkway and Patriot is slowly moving toward its completion. City Council will likely approve a District 1 zoning change next week for the property footprint generally between the Spinx Station and Tuskegee on Ashley Phosphate Road. This change will alter the property’s industrial zoning to multiple family residential, B-2. Some 70 “apartment” structures are immediately in prospect. Councilman Kenny Skipper and I have voiced vigorous objections and proposed a more predictable Planned Development District zoning document to guide this development. The District 1 councilman, Michael Brown, supports the developer’s proposed zoning. If you have not yet visited the Aquatic Center on Patriot Boulevard, stop by. It has become a busy facility, even as activities are restricted by the CVOID 19 concerns. The S.C. High School League conducted its state championships at the Center last week; and the number of “memberships” is steadily growing. Here is a link to the Center’s activities and some information about admission fees and memberships: https://www.northcharleston.org/residents/parks-and-recreation/programs-and-camps/aquatics/ And here is another great summary of Dorchester County initiatives: https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/SCDORCHESTER/bulletins/2a4b958 Glad to meet with District 4 neighborhoods groups at any convenient time – and in virus safe conditions- and I will gladly add any District 4 resident to the direct mailing list.
