We are pleased to confirm that curbside pickups of recyclable materials for North Charleston homes in Dorchester County will begin anew the week of January 3.
The planned system will be operated by city employees using new trucks and disposal cans designed for single stream recycling. The material will be processed at Charleston County’s new facility on Palmetto Commerce Parkway under an inter-governmental agreement.
Worldwide supply chain interruptions have been a challenge for acquiring the equipment and the collection cans. So has the recruitment of workers qualified to drive and operate the trucks/equipment. This has delayed the rebooting of this popular service.
-Please Be Aware of implementation Timetable-Delivery of Collection Cans BEGINS NEXT WEEK – Our City’s Public Works team has taken advantage of an early delivery time slot from the supplier of the cans to assure that the collection bins were in place by January 3. Distribution to homes begins next week – Monday, October 25. With thousands of homes to be accommodated, this distribution will take approximately two weeks to complete.
So, please expect a new recycling collection can to be delivered to your home by November 7 and please understand it should not be used until January 3.
This lead time allows the city’s Public Work team to make sure the cans are in hand during this period of supply chain uncertainties, and test and confirm operating procedures – and complete the recruitment of qualified operators.
Each new can will have attached to it a bright trifold flyer explaining general rules and information about pickup schedules, etc.
We will update schedule details in the coming weeks.
So, the bottom line “good news” is that Mayor Summey and his Public Works team have persisted through the challenges of the pandemic and supply chain congestion, and renewal of this much-anticipated service for will soon be realized.
