CURBSIDE RECYCLING BEGINS ANEW The Schedule – The “Dos and Don’ts”
For North Charleston residents residing in Dorchester County, single-stream recycling pickups begin January 3. THAT’S NEXT WEEK!

This weekly service will be available on your regularly scheduled days for trash and garbage pickups. The operation will be conducted by trained city employees using brand new equipment. The material will be processed at Charleston County’s regional recycling center on Palmetto Commerce Parkway. The contract for this intergovernmental agreement was approved by City Council earlier this month.

There will be no changes for recycling services for Charleston County residents within District 4.

Please take a few minutes to view this informative two-part video summary of the schedules and “dos and don’ts” guidelines for single-stream recycling:

Dorchester County has begun preliminary site reviews and is finalizing construction plans for the new branch library on Patriot Boulevard, just north of the Aquatic Center. The facility will include a new media center for Fort Dorchester High School. If all goes as planned, this building will open in mid-2023.

And incidentally, that “For Lease” sign on the property adjacent to the Aquatic Center was erected in error. That property is owned by Dorchester County.

Our city now owns the tract directly across from the Aquatic Center, and conceptual planning for its use has begun. We will be looking for opportunities to work closely again with Dorchester County and the Dorchester District 2 School Board on planning for qualities-of-life developments – parks and recreation, senior center, etc. I will keep everyone posted.

Speed limits have been lowered on Wescott and Patriot boulevards. Digital speed monitoring devices should arrive in early January and crosswalk safety enhancements on both these busy roadways should be underway in January. More focused enforcement by NCPD will also be evident. We should all keep in mind that flouting of speed limits, stop signs and general traffic safety rules is epidemic all over Regional Charleston. So is littering. This is a matter of human behavior. Please urge all your friends and neighbors to slow down, respect traffic signals and signage, and consider the shared values of safety and good order.

The recently completed 2020 census confirmed that population has steadily increased over the last decade, particularly in the southern reaches of Dorchester County.  And the patterns have simply accelerated cut-through traffic patterns on Wescott and Patriot boulevards. These roadways in 2021 had volumes exceeding 2030 projections.  Another interesting factoid – there has been a steady turnover of neighbors, too, over the past 10 years. There are estimates that in District 4 neighborhoods, residency turnovers range from 45 to 70 per cent. The ratio of “rentals” in residential neighborhoods has increased. New folks are welcomed and assured that our city cares about our neighborhoods and operates with an emphasis on good service. All residents should check in regularly at www.northcharleston.org for the latest information on services and activities or even to make a work request, such as trash bin deliveries, signage repairs, potholes, etc.

I am always available to help with these communications, too. Just contact me at rbrinson@northcharleston.org.

And please share this little newsletter with your neighbors. Glad to add any District 4 resident to the direct mailing list. Send me a request at rbrinson@northcharleston.org.
